The tool chain

The tool chain

Prep, base, eyes, set: which brushes, sponges and mats work together at each step.

A routine in four links: prepare your tools, build the base, do the eyes, then sculpt and set. Each link pairs the brushes with the sponge and the cleaning tool that work alongside them.

  1. Freshly washed brushes drying flat next to a cleaning mat

    01

    Prep

Clean tools first. A brush that went into foundation yesterday will streak today. Wash on a ridged mat, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry heads flat inside guard sleeves.

  2. Buffing foundation onto a cheek with a cherry-red kabuki brush

    02

    Base

Warm handles, H01 to H09. Paint foundation on with the paddle or buff it with the kabuki, press it in with a damp sponge, conceal with the flat, then add blush with the domed or tapered brush.

  3. Blending eyeshadow with a teal-handled blending brush

    03

    Eyes

Cool handles, H10 to H18. Pack colour on the lid with the flat shader, blend the crease with the tapered blender, detail with the pencil and line with the angled liner.

  4. Dusting setting powder with a large taupe powder brush

    04

    Sculpt & set

Neutral handles, H19 to H24. Contour under the cheekbone, press powder under the eyes with a puff, veil the face with the large powder brush.
